North of New Delhi:

the magic of the mountains

Discovering the West

Important: some roads will be closed during the monsoon due to heavy rain and landslides.

  • Nainital, Ranikhet, Kausani...: you will drive through a very nice scenery, you will be able to relax near the lake in Nainital. Should the weather be nice and clear you will see some of the highest mountains in the world like the Nanda Devi (7,816m). On the way, you could stop at the Corbett tiger reserve and even if you are not lucky enough to spot a tiger, you will be able see all sort of wildlife like many birds, wild elephants, wild boars, jackals, rhesus monkeys, deer, leopards, varanus, gavials, crocodiles...
  • Shimla: is a little town clinging to and scattered over a hill side. It has preserved its English atmosphere. You can visit the botanical garden and the Viceregal Lodge and see the place where so many crucial decisions had been taken. You can also go to Kufri for a horse ride...
  • McLeod Ganj (Dharamsala): Here you will find a typical Tibetan atmosphere as it houses the Dalaï Lama's official residence and Tibetan refugees. You can go to the Buddhist sanctuary. The place is also rich in Tibetan heritage: there are museums, institutes, you can learn Tibetan language... You can also ask if you can meet the Dalaï Lama, although it is very difficut to obtain an audience. On the other side of the town, you will find an old church (St John of the Wilderness) dating back to the British times with old graves resting behind trees.
  • Amritsar: the Golden Temple in Penjab: you will remain speechless in front of this jewel. The place is full of prayers fluttering in the air.

This is one of the four holy places connected with the Buddha. Here he is supposed to have reached the awakening.

There is a very special atmosphere in this town as you can see buddhists from all over the world. Buddhist songs enshrine the place with a melodious atmosphere.

You can see many temples and monasteries as well as a huge statue of the Buddha in the Kamakura Japanese style measuring 25 metres. It was inaugurated by the Dalai-Lama in 1989.
